Né en 1986 en Estonie, Mihkel Poll s’est formé à l’Académie Estonienne de musique et de théâtre auprès de Pr Ivari Ilja, ainsi qu’à la Guildhall School of Music and Drama avec Pr Ronan O’Hara. Il a aussi participé aux masterclasses de Pr Eliso Virsaladze à la Scuola di Musica di Fiesole en Italie. Il a récemment obtenu le titre de Docteur en Musique.

Mihkel Poll a gagné plusieurs prix dans des compétitions internationales, parmi lesquelles les premiers prix des concours suivant : Concours International de Piano Rina Sala Gallo (Italie), Concours International de Piano de Tallinn (Estonie) et Concours International de Piano de Ferrol (Espagne).

Mihkel Poll a déjà joué dans plusieurs pays : Estonie, Lettonie, Lituanie, Russie, Suède, France, Espagne, Portugal, Pologne, Belgique, Norvège, Grèce, Grande-Bretagne et États-Unis.

Il a joué notamment avec l’Orchestre National Symphonique de Lettonie, l’Orchestre National Symphonique d’Estonie, l’Orchestre Symphonique Nordique, l’Orchestre Symphonique de la Ville de Birmingham, l’Orchestre Symphonique de Sarasota, l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Magdeburg, le Sinfonia Birmingham, l’Orchestre de Chambre de Norrbotten, l'Orchestre Philharmonique de Norwich, l’Orchestre Symphonique Lincoln, l'Orchestre Symphonique de Vanemuise et l’Orchestre de la Ville de Pärnu. Parmi les chefs sous la direction desquels il a joué, comptent Neeme Järvi, Arvo Volmer, Olari Elts, Anu Tali, Michael Seal, Eri Klas, Richard Llaing, Matt Andrews.

Dans les dernières saisons  il était en tournée européenne avec l’Orchestre Symphonique Nordique (dirigé par Anu Tali), a joué son premier récital à la London Wigmore Hall, et était en résidence avec l’Orchestre National d’Estonie. Durant cette résidence il s’est produit sous la direction de Neeme Järvi, Arvo Volmer et Olari Elts.

En avril 2014, Mihkel a joué la première mondiale du concerto pour piano de la grande compositrice estonienne Helena Tulve. Dernièrement il s’est produit en récital mais aussi accompagné d’orchestres en Italie, Allemagne, Grande-Bretagne, France, Pologne et Estonie.

Mihkel a enregistré son premier disque 20th Century Piano sur le label Ondine. Son deuxième enregistrement est sorti chez DUX. Il contenait des œuvres d’Enescu, Bartók, Tüür et Kõrvits. Il fut distingué en recevant le prix du Meilleur Album Estonien Classique 2016. En 2017, Mihkel Poll a enregistré et sorti un album avec sa soeur Mari: il contient des œuvres pour violon et piano d'Enescu, Poulenc, Schoenberg et Tüür.

Mihkel Poll reçut en 2004 le Prix de la Fondation Culturelle d’Estonie et le Prix de la Jeune Personnalité de la Culture du Président d’Estonie 2013

2. Duo with Peijun Xu (viola)

One of the finest Chinese viola players of her generation, Peijun Xu and one of the most outstanding Estonian pianists, Mihkel Poll performed together for the first time in 2014, at the Järvi Festival in Pärnu, Estonia. The enthusiastic reaction of the public gave the two artists the idea to prepare three different concert programs which they will present together. They include original pieces for viola and piano, as well as arrangements which allow their public to discover milestone repertoire pieces in new, intriguing light.

The first program includes wonderful Konzertstück by Georges Enescu, a piece which merits as much attention as his well known three Violin Sonatas. It is followed by the viola version of Sergei Rachamninov's Cello Sonata, Op.19. The program closes with Dmitri Shostakovitch's Viola Sonata –composer's final musical testament. The second program focuses on great romantic pieces: Johannes Brahms' Cello Sonata and César Franck's Violin Sonata, in their viola versions. The two pieces, unveiling their new sound are preceded by Robert Schumann's Märchenbilder. Finally, the third program ranges from Johann Sebastian Bach's Gamba Sonata to Paul Hindemith's Viola Sonata. Between the two pieces, distant by over two hundred years, a musical bridge is constructed with the viola version of Robert Schumann's first Violin Sonata and Franz Schubert's first Sonatina.
